Bir is a village located in the west of Joginder Nagar Valley in India, settle circa early 1960s for Tibetan refugees. It’s now known as the paragliding capital of India and home to the Bir Tibetan Colony

Bir is home to several institutions that attract students, tourists, volunteers and other visitors from all over India and abroad:

The Deer Park Institute is a haven for those wishing to study under the classical Indian wisdom traditions. Rinpoche established the institute in 2006 with the Dalai Lama’s blessing, and it has since hosted many workshops and guest lectures given by renowned scholars and meditation teachers.

The Dharmalaya Institute is an eco-campus for service learning and contemplative practice. It is also an Indian charitable society NGO that focuses on education, service, and compassionate living. If you’re interested in visiting, make sure to contact them ahead of time as they might be closed off to visitors for silent retreats or special programs.

The Chokling Gompa monastery, which is the home of Neten Chokling Rinpoche, a reincarnate lama in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and the director of Milarepa (2006), offers many beautiful attractions for visitors such as its magnificent Tibetan architecture and large stupa. In addition to hosting ongoing programmes for full-time monastic students throughout the year, the monastery also periodically opens its doors to members of the public for Buddhist ceremonies. The guest house and restaurant on site are additional amenities that guests can enjoy during their stay.

The Bir Tea Factory has been in operation for many years and offers tours for people interested in learning about how tea is produced.
